John Herrick, the Principal of Herrick Solutions, is dedicated to find solutions to get your technology commercialized through support of the public sector through public/private partnerships. He has over 30 years experience in assisting private companies and public entities to form partnerships and secure funding for their clean technology and energy projects, including wind, solar, advanced biofuel, geothermal and energy efficiency projects. He has helped structure new energy production facilities totaling over $4 billion, structured the federal financing for the nation's first cellulosic bio-refinery, and helped form research and development partnerships with private industry, academia, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, the Colorado and the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Defense and the National Security Agency.

       John is internationally recognized for a broad spectrum of acti-vities in clean technologies and government contracting. He is one of America's leading practitioners in assisting companies in entering into public and private partnerships in energy financing. He has unique and specialized insight into DOE grant financing and has worked on over 15 DOE loan guarantees. John was instrumental in implementing the current DOE loan-guarantee program under the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and formed close working relationships with the officials charged with implementing that program and the DOE grant programs. He has                       experience in transactional practice, developing projects in all  major sectors of  renewable generation, renewable fuels, and energy per-formance contracting. He structured major project developments in geothermal and solar generation in California, developed wind projects in Colorado, biofuels projects throughout the Midwest, and helped establish, nationally, the federal energy savings performance con-tracting system and assisted investment bankers in developing new financing tools for public private partnerships in energy efficiency projects.

​       As a private practitioner at law, John worked to develop the sustainability and clean technology practice at the law firm of 

Brownstein Farber Hyatt and Schreck where he was recognized by the Colorado legal community as the the "2011 Best Renewable Energy Lawyer in Colorado."   In private practice he represented leading developers of clean technologies with the federal government.  In that capacity he obtained over $250 million in Recovery Act funds for his clients.   John has also represented clients on the DOE energy-efficiency appliance regulatory process in obtaining  fair treatment for  their products on efficiency standards.

In this position he oversaw the operations of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and worked extensively in renewable energy development with the Western Area Power Administration, public utilities, energy entrepreneurs, project developers and public policy makers. Prior to moving to Colorado, John practiced energy, finance and government contract law in Washington, DC for the U.S. Department of Energy where he developed various privatization initiatives using innovative financing techniques including energy development loan guarantees for the DOE from 1985 through 1992.

John is frequently sought after to speak at national conferences on government contracting and renewable energy/energy efficiency matters. He has recently spoken at the ABA Annual Meeting in NY, at a major federally-sponsored energy conference in Phoenix and at the premier biofuels conference in Washington, DC and the World Renewable Energy Forum in Denver, CO .

       An Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, John taught Renewable Energy and Energy Project Finance, the first law course in the nation concentrating on renewable energy. John is also an author of The Law of Clean Energy, the leading textbook in this area of legal practice.

       John is licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia and is admitted and qualified as an Attorney and Counsellor of the Supreme Court of the United States,, the U.S. Court of Claims and various U.S. Circuit Courts.
